What to consider before you drive.
Driving a motor vehicle isn't a right, it's a privilege and a responsibility. In the United States, many people are dependent on driving for work, getting around, errands, and other tasks. Driving safely and with certain precautions is absolutely necessary. There are millions of drivers on the road every day, and it only takes one person neglecting to maintain a safe and responsible driving environment to put many people at danger, including themselves, other drivers, pedestrians, as well as personal property and more. Simple steps and precautions can make driving safer for all.
Equipment
It is important to frequently check your vehicle for many different safety and equipment concerns. Are you lights all working correctly? (Tip: Ask a friend to help you check your brake lights.) Are your brakes within recommended wear and tear levels? Many people don't know that bad struts can create a dangerous driving environment at higher speeds on bumpy or degraded road conditions. If your struts are old, consider driving slower on bumpy roads until you can get them fixed, and get them fixed as soon as possible. Low on cash? Consider replacing the front struts early, as they are most susceptible to turned-wheel bumpy conditions causing a dangerous situation. A car that has an alignment issue can also cause a dangerous situation. Making sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape is as easy and effective way of keeping yourself safe on the road.
Weather
Certain locations and times of year are prone to bad weather. Always check ahead to make sure that there are not any weather alerts before taking long trips. Educate yourself on proper ways to drive in weather conditions and equip yourself with proper items such as chains or ice scrapers to ensure you will not be caught in the cold.
Personal Ability
Driving safely requires the mind to be in a responsive and clear state. Eliminate, prepare before driving or ignore any distractions that may cause you to lose driving focus, such as MP3 players, cell phones, food, loose objects, or any other distractions that can take full attention away from the road. Medication, fatigue, alcohol, sickness, and other factors can vastly affect your ability to drive, and it is up to you to know when you are beyond driving condition mentally and to maintain a distraction free driving environment.
